Much of New Southgate was originally the hamlet of Betstile. The southern part of the area was known as Colney Hatch Park, but it was altered to New Southgate due to local residents wishing to remain unassociated with the famous Colney Hatch Lunatic Asylum.
New Southgate was home to Jerome K Jerome, writer of "Three Men in a Boat". He is commemorated in New Southgate with a statue of a boat and a mosaic of a dog on the New Southgate Millennium Green on Station Road.
